Do you frequently see a bundle of your hairs swirling down the shower drain? Don’t get spooked out. “To a certain extent, hair loss in women is normal” tells us a leading New York-based hair restoration specialist Dr. James C. Marotta, “On an average day a typical woman would loos around 100 hairs per day.”

Dr Marotta teaches us this trick, to help you check if your hair loss rate is normal: “Take about 60 strands of hair between your fingers and pull, while running your fingers through your hair. If you end up with 5 to 8 loose hairs, that’s normal. An excess of 15 hairs, unfortunately, is not a common and it means that you are loosing more hairs than you should.”

Dr. Marotta explains in more detail: “For most, 90 percent of the hair on your head is in the growing phase, while about 10 percent of your hair is in the ‘resting’ phase, meaning that 10 percent will fall out and leave room for new hair growth within a certain period of time. If you are losing more than 15 hairs per pull, it likely means more than 10 percent of the hair on your head is in the ‘resting’ phase,” While this is still not too bad, it might be the sign that you should consult an expert, just so that a treatment can be started early if one is needed.
